Mike's Story
Life
I was born in Oshawa to Greek parents. I was known as Mike Poulos though my real/legal name was Mike Antonopoulos which I used in High school. I legally changed it to Mike Anton in 1990. I grew up in Cobourg,a place that I still consider home. I left there at the end of Grade 12 and moved to Oshawa where I finished Grade 13 and then went on to college where I graduated in Broadcasting. I worked at radio stations in Cobourg, Oshawa and Ajax. I have been out of broadcasting for 7 years but I hope to resume a part-time career. I am now working as a Housing Manager for a non profit agency in Ajax. I am happily married to a wonderful wife named Jill. We own our home in Whitby and we have no children just one cat named Maggie. I am a big fan of the Montreal Canadiens and I like collecting hockey related items. I am also an active member and volunteer in two churches in Oshawa and on two housing boards.
School
I loved CR Gummow Public School in Cobourg and all my friends. Life seemed so simple then as all we ever cared about was playing streethockey. My friends included Kevin Rusk, the Doaks, and Jim Heinbuck who was the son of the Principle. Highschool was great too but that first year was tough adjusting especially having a teacher like Mr. Taylor. Grades 10 to 12 were a breeze and Mr. Clarke was a great influence on me. ...Expand for more
I think I missed out on a lot because I was so shy. I remember having a crush on a girl named Cynthia Jibb. I went to Centennial College for broadcasting and I knew then I had to lose my shyness if I wanted a career in radio or T.V. I learned a great deal in my first job at CHUC radio in Cobourg. Now I am working in a social services type field as a counsellor and housing manager in Ajax.
College
Life at Centennial was good. I liked our Broadcasting Coordinator, Don Gray. He was a great teacher and he more than anyone influenced my writing style. I loved working at the college radio station CKCC. I remember doing a lot of shows and playing oldies music which some of the teachers enjoyed.
Workplace
As a housing manager, I have to assist low to moderate income people find housing which is a challenge in itself. I also manage a waiting list for those applying for social or non profit housing. I process the applications. I also operate a loan program for those behind on their rent and hydro or gas bills. The work is demanding yet rewarding. I begin most days by 6:15 a.m. which is two hours before my normal start time. We are funded by the Province and Region of Durham. I hope to some day work for the Region and resume a part-time radio broadcasting career which I left in 2001. I worked full time in radio from 1982 to 1988.
